New Perspectives on Fibromyalgia and Related Illnesses

September 27, 2008
Simches Research Building (Starr Center, 2nd Floor)
Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA
Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal pain condition that affects three to six million Americans of which 80% to 90% are women. This condition causes widespread muscular pain, fatigue, and tenderness. Gaps exist with regard to diagnosis and treatment contributing to clinical morbidity. This program educates providers about making an accurate diagnosis, particularly taking into account the high degree of co-morbidity that accompanies fibromyalgia. It also educates providers about newly approved pharmacologic agents they can combine with non-pharmacologic treatment modalities to improve the overall management of this debilitating condition.

Following this one-day live symposium is a one-hour Casecast on October 15th.

July 24, 2008, Thursday, Shakespeare's Pizza Columbia, Missouri Sponsored by Linda Chandler

In April of this year, NFRA received an e-mail from Linda Chandler in Columbia, Missouri.  She and her daughter suffer with fibromyalgia.  She wanted to organize an event to help raise funds.

Her efforts have led to an amazing night at Shakespeare’s Pizza in Columbia, Missouri.  On Thursday, July 24, if you order a pizza, drinks, gift card, salad—anything on the menu, at Shakespeare’s Pizza, and hand them the NFRA flyer, 15% of the purchase price will be donated to the National Fibromyalgia Research Association.  Both Shakespeare’s Pizzas’ locations in Columbia are participating.  You can visit the restaurant, or get delivery.  You have to have the NFRA flyer, so be sure to print it out!

Linda, her daughter and friends and family have been handing out the flyer, gotten local TV and radio coverage.  Thank you, Linda for your support.  We’ll keep pushing to get you the help you and your daughter need.

Joe Kotlowski wanted a unique way to show his support for his mom who has suffered with fibromyalgia for more than 10 years. “She has shown great courage in dealing with the disease,” and Joe knows he’s going to have to draw on a small piece of that courage to complete the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon on May 18, 2008 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Joe is reaching out to his friends, family and professional acquaintances to sponsor him for every mile he runs with the donations going to the National Fibromyalgia Research Association. If you’re interested in learning more about the marathon, go to To use your credit card to sponsor Joe, click on Donations. Make a General Donation and indicate you are sponsoring Joe in the “Additional Information/Instructions” section.

Reflections on Human Ills, Wills, and the Power to Survive Ourselves
October 5-31, 2007
The Gallery at CherryLion Studios

An art exhibition at The Gallery at CherryLion’s Studios in midtown Atlanta (889 Morris Street NW).  Artwork will show different facets of the human figure either at peace or struggling with physical/emotional difficulties.  The show is sponsored by Trisha Cardillo, Disability Assistance.

Emerge Art Management represents all the artists involved in the exhibition.  Janessa Dauberman, from Emerge Art and who has suffered with fibromyalgia since she was 17, was inspired and appalled to hear the stories Trisha told about her clients.  Janessa and Trisha joined together to create this exhibition to show the amazing things one can accomplish, even with a debilitating disability.  “I use my art to express the evolving feelings of being in constant battle with my body, and I think that is something everyone can relate to on some level,” says Ms. Dauberman.

Events in the month-long exhibition include:

October 5, 2007 (Friday) Opening gala from 7-10 pm.  There will be hors d’oeuvres, wine and classical music.  Short presentations by Trisha Cardillo, Janessa Dauberman and others will further explain the objectives of the show and the relationship to fibromyalgia.

October 27, 2007 (Saturday) 4:00 pm.   A panel discussion at the gallery.  Open forum to discuss how artists approach different themes, feelings on figurative art and the issues that go along with it (nudity, beauty, movement, etc).  There will be an open question and answer period for patrons.

October 31, 2007 (Wednesday) 7-11:00 pm.  Celebrate Halloween at a masked gala in conjunction with a silent auction to benefit the National Fibromyalgia Research Association.  There will be hors d’oeuvres, wine and a performance by Awalim, the number one tribal belly dance troupe in the southeast.  Masks will be provided for patrons and costumes are encouraged.   Suggested $10 donation at the door.
